UKBFTOG: BLACK JOY

, UKBFTOG: BLACK JOY

Sat 17 September 2022 – Tuesday 20 September 2022
The NEC Birmingham – The Photography Show Stand F

Featured artists: April Alexander, Denise Maxwell, Dionne Bailey, Dominique Nok, Funmi Akingbe, Jemella Ukaegbu, Jumi Popoola, RUBY LDN, LA Creativity, Laura Rose, Liliana Séca Santos, Elizabeth Okoh, Naomi St Juste, Rele James, Reneé Murray, Shilonite Simon, Victoria Moyosola.

This exhibition celebrates and recognises Black culture and various aspects of life from the perspective of Black UK based female photographers. For centuries Black lives have been subject to trauma and have also been displayed as such. Stereotyping, exclusion, and one-sided stories have greatly produced false and inaccurate representation of Black communities. With Black Joy, UKBFTOG reclaims the joys of being Black, both in front and behind the lens.

UKBFTOG offers a balanced narrative showcasing a variety of topics through engaging and vivid photographs. Here the artists reimagine beauty standards, everyday family life, and the massive contributions to the entertainment industry. They boldly and proudly make themselves and their subjects visible on their own terms and celebrate who they are, where they are and how they live life.

UK Black Female Photographers – UKBFTOG – is a vibrant and diverse community of established, mid-career and emerging Black UK based female photographers. The community, founded by Jemella Ukaegbu in 2017, connects members who are specialised in a variety of photography genres. Within a safe space UKBFTOG offers their members support and opportunities from learning and development activities to (assisting) at photography commissions, studio meetups, photo walks and public group exhibitions.

Black Joy is created in partnership with MPB and One Vision Imaging and curated by Dominique Nok. Visit the exhibition in Hall 2 stand F.

“Black Joy is a significant exhibition by members of the UKBFTOG community that highlights topics that are generally unseen by the wider public. Being both a member and the curator, I am immensely proud of the talent within the community and thankful for the support it offers. With this exhibition I hope our images will be conversation starters and perhaps even challenge existing narratives regarding representation.” – Dominique Nok, Curator
