Bill Abernethy Nominated for The Societies’ Photographer of the Year 2014
Bill Abernethy has been shortlisted for The Societies’ Photographer of the Year 2014. The Societies is Europe’s largest all-welcome association for the serious photographer.
Going up against some of the worlds most renowned photographers, Bill Abernethy will compete for the prestigious award of Architectural Photographer of the Year and The Societies’ Photographer of the Year, with the winner being revealed at The Societies’ 2015 Convention Awards Dinner held on 17 January 2015 in London.
Over 12,500 images were entered in to the competition and photographers from all around the globe have been putting forward their images making this a truly international competition.
Phil Jones The Societies’ CEO says, “This year we have seen a fantastic range of images and the standard has been very high. The finalist represent some of the finest images entered in to the competition and have competed against some of the world’s best photographers. Congratulations to all our finalists.”
Bill says, “The image is of Victoria Square, Belfast, and it is one of those buildings that no matter how often you see it, the temptation is to photograph it. It is so futuristic looking, and many people think it resembles a space ship. It has become one of those iconic, and most photographed landmarks in Belfast. The thought behind the shot is to emphasise the unique architectural nature of this structure, and the impression it gives of a space ship, ready to be boarded for take off. I feel it does resemble something you might expect to see at NASA. The angle on the shot is deliberate, to add to the drama, and this is added to by the image being in black and white. It was taken at night, which makes the reflected lights on the dome look like stars. “
He continues, “Once again I am proud and honoured to be nominated for this prestigious award for the second time in three years. Considering how international the entries are, I feel privileged to be representing Newtownabbey, and Northern Ireland generally. In my photography I make every effort to promote Northern Ireland. Being a member of ‘The Societies’ has been the most rewarding part of my photographic journey to date. This truly international group of Photographic Societies, offering me the opportunity to be mentored, obtain qualifications, and enter competition, has really inspired me to constantly strive to improve my photographic skills. Being even nominated for one of their major awards has given me a real buzz, and is fantastic. Should I be fortunate to win the award that would be amazing”.
