Creating a beautiful image and producing a high-quality fine art print is only part of the process. If that print is going to hang on a client’s wall for decades, the photographer also needs to consider what happens to it over time.
Will the colours fade? Can sunlight damage it? Does the choice of paper make a difference? What about UV-filtering glass, humidity or the frame itself?
Fortunately, modern inkjet printing has come a very long way.

What about ozone?
Light isn’t the only environmental threat.
Ozone and other airborne pollutants can also affect photographic prints.
Inkjet papers have highly engineered receptive coatings designed to capture the microscopic droplets of ink produced by the printer. Some of these coatings have a very large surface area, which can make them particularly reactive to airborne gases.
Ozone can come from a variety of sources, including pollution and some electrical equipment.
Older inkjet systems were particularly vulnerable to this type of deterioration. Some prints produced in the early 2000s became notorious for developing an orange or reddish appearance relatively quickly.
Modern systems are much more resistant, but the problem hasn’t disappeared entirely.

There is also an interesting contradiction: if you subsequently put the print behind UV-filtering glazing, much of the ultraviolet light required to activate the optical brightener is removed.
For a valuable fine art print, a conservative approach is therefore to use a stable, archival-quality paper, appropriate mounting materials and UV-filtering glazing.
Humidity and ink migration
Another less obvious problem is ink migration.
Ink can move laterally within an inkjet coating, and this effect can be accelerated by humidity and other environmental conditions.
The effect may be extremely small, but at high levels of magnification it can become measurable.
The structure of the paper coating matters here too. Some combinations of ink and paper are considerably more resistant than others.
For photographers producing exhibition-quality prints, this is another reason to use a printer, ink and paper combination that has been properly tested together, rather than simply choosing whichever paper produces the most attractive result on screen.
What happens if the print gets wet?
Water resistance is another important consideration.
Some modern pigment ink systems are highly water resistant, particularly when paired with suitable papers.
Older technologies could be dramatically less robust.
There have been examples of prints where the image could be badly damaged by water, and some early inkjet prints could even be smudged long after printing.
This is one area where modern printing technology has made enormous progress.
Nevertheless, “water resistant” should not be confused with “waterproof”.

If you’re selling a £500 or £1,000 fine art print, it makes little sense to spend considerable time and money creating the print and then put it into a poor-quality frame.

UV-filtering glazing
This can significantly reduce the amount of damaging ultraviolet radiation reaching the print.
Suitable mounting
The print should be mounted in a way that doesn’t introduce unnecessary chemical or mechanical problems.
A sensible location
Even the best print shouldn’t spend decades in direct sunlight, beside a radiator or in a damp environment.
The photographer’s responsibility doesn’t necessarily end when the print leaves the studio.

Those figures are impressive, but they should be treated as laboratory-based permanence estimates rather than guarantees.
The important point is that today’s best fine art printing systems are capable of producing extraordinarily durable photographs.
Does the printer matter?
Yes — but don’t make the mistake of looking only at the printer.
A high-end printer paired with an unsuitable paper isn’t necessarily going to produce the most permanent print.
Likewise, a relatively affordable printer using a well-matched ink and paper combination can produce excellent results.
For professional photographers, the most useful question isn’t:
“Which printer lasts the longest?”
It’s:
“Which complete ink-and-paper workflow gives me the quality and permanence I need?”
Independent testing can help answer that question.
Should photographers tell clients about print longevity?
Definitely.
If you’re selling a valuable photographic print, longevity can become part of the value proposition.
