World Photography Day: 187 Years of Capturing the World 📸

On 19 August 2026, photographers around the world will come together to celebrate World Photography Day – a day dedicated to the art, craft, science and history of photography.

It is a fitting moment to reflect on just how far photography has come. From painstakingly produced images on polished metal plates to today’s mirrorless cameras, smartphones and increasingly sophisticated computational photography, the technology may have changed dramatically, but the fundamental purpose remains the same: to capture a moment and preserve it for the future.

From the daguerreotype to the digital age

The date of World Photography Day has its roots in 19 August 1839, when details of Louis Daguerre’s daguerreotype process were formally announced in Paris. The process provided one of the first practical ways of creating permanent photographic images and represented a major milestone in the development of photography.

Photography would go on to evolve at an extraordinary pace. Glass plates gave way to film, colour photography opened up new possibilities for visual storytelling, and eventually digital sensors transformed the way images were captured, stored and shared.

Today, photographers can take thousands of photographs without changing a roll of film, instantly review an image and edit it within seconds. Cameras can track subjects, recognise scenes and combine multiple exposures, while smartphones have put increasingly capable cameras into the hands of millions of people.

Yet despite all this technology, the photograph itself remains remarkably simple.

A photograph can record a family milestone, document a historic event, reveal the behaviour of an animal or simply preserve an ordinary moment that might otherwise have been forgotten.

Photography as a way of seeing 👁️

Perhaps photography’s greatest achievement isn’t technological at all.

It has changed the way we look at the world.

A wildlife photographer might spend hours waiting for a fleeting moment. A street photographer can find extraordinary stories in everyday surroundings. A landscape photographer may return to the same location repeatedly, waiting for the right combination of light and weather.

The camera encourages us to slow down, observe and notice things that we might otherwise walk past.

And that’s why photography continues to matter in an age when almost everyone has a camera in their pocket.

187 years – and still evolving

Photography has never stood still.

The transition from film to digital was once considered revolutionary. Today, artificial intelligence and computational photography are creating another major shift, raising new questions about what it means to take and create a photograph.

But perhaps the most exciting thing about photography is that there is no single correct way to do it.

Whether you’re using a professional mirrorless camera, an old film camera, a compact or your smartphone, photography ultimately comes down to the same thing: your vision and the story you want to tell.

Keep taking photographs

After 187 years of technological change, the reason we take photographs remains remarkably consistent.

We photograph people we care about. Places we visit. Wildlife we encounter. Moments we don’t want to forget. And sometimes, simply because we see something beautiful.

So, this World Photography Day, pick up your camera and make a photograph.

Enter it into a competition. Share it with fellow photographers. Learn something new. Try a different genre. Or simply photograph something that means something to you.

It doesn’t have to be technically perfect. It doesn’t need the latest equipment.

Just keep photographing. 📸

Because after 187 years, photography is still giving us a way to capture the world – one image at a time.
