Winners of the Global SinoPhoto Awards 2024 Announced

Grace Lau, 21st Century Types, UK, 2005 - Winner of the Betser Prize

The Winners of the Global SinoPhoto Awards 2024 were announced and celebrated at an entertaining and lively event, hosted by GSPA together with The British Library, on Monday 5th February. Grace Lau is the winner of the Betser Prize with a selection from her 400+ image series, 21st Century Types, taken in her Chinese Studio Hastings, UK. Lau says, “Through this project I am making an oblique comment on Imperialist visions of the ‘exotic’ Chinese and by reversing roles, I have become the Imperialist photographer documenting my exotic subjects in the ‘Port’ of Hastings.

Awards art director Gemma Barnett comments, “This year’s finalists have incredibly diverse approaches to how they have used the medium of photography. Alongside traditional documentary photographs by Eric Leleu and Youbing Zhan, Laura Chen has physically woven two photographs together to explore the metaphor of the two cultures existing within her, Zhou Ji has found a photographic answer to Jackson Pollock’s abstract paintings, and Han Yang has created a glossy fashion photograph with Eastern influence. Unlike the previous editions of the Global SinoPhoto Awards, this year’s finalists have all established themselves and had some success within the photography world. This is a reflection that the Awards are growing year on year, attracting an increasingly strong group of artists and photographers to submit.”

The other category winners were:
