Adobe Firefly for Photographers: What You Can Actually Use It For

Artificial intelligence has moved from being an interesting experiment to becoming part of the everyday toolkit for photographers and other creative professionals.

Adobe Firefly is one of the most accessible examples because it sits within the Adobe ecosystem that many photographers already use. Rather than being a completely separate AI service, Firefly’s technology is built into products such as Photoshop and is also available through the Firefly web app.




For photographers, the interesting question isn’t simply whether Firefly can make convincing pictures. It can.

The more useful question is: where can it genuinely save you time or help solve a creative problem?

What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is Adobe’s family of generative AI tools for creating and editing content. Depending on the feature and application, it can generate or modify images, video, audio, graphics and other creative content.

For photographers, the image-generation and image-editing tools are probably the most immediately useful.

You can describe what you want in a text prompt, generate variations, or use existing imagery as a starting point. Firefly can also be used for tasks such as extending an image beyond its original boundaries, adding or removing objects and creating backgrounds.

This is quite different from simply applying another filter to a photograph. Generative AI is creating new pixels based on the instructions and reference material you provide.

That distinction is important.

Where Firefly can be useful to photographers

There are plenty of situations where you might not need to generate an entire photograph but could benefit from generating part of an image.

Imagine, for example, that you have photographed a product against a simple background but your client now wants a wider composition for a website banner.

Rather than reshooting the product, you could extend the canvas and generate additional background material.

The same approach can be useful for:

  • extending backgrounds
  • creating space around a subject for text
  • removing unwanted objects
  • replacing distracting elements
  • producing alternative backgrounds
  • visualising an idea before a commercial shoot
  • creating supporting graphics for social media
  • developing concepts for an advertising campaign

For a working photographer, these practical applications may be much more useful than generating complete imaginary photographs from scratch.

Generating images from a description

Firefly can also generate an image from a written description.

This is where things become particularly interesting — and where photographers need to remember that the result isn’t a photograph simply because it looks photographic.

A prompt can describe a subject, location, lighting style, mood or composition, and Firefly will attempt to produce an appropriate image.

This can be useful during the planning stage of a shoot.

A photographer working on a campaign, for example, might use generated images to explore possible compositions before committing to models, locations and equipment. A client can see the general direction of an idea without the photographer having to produce a finished photograph for every possibility.

Used in that way, AI becomes another form of visual brainstorming.

Don’t believe everything you see

One lesson from the early generations of image-generating AI remains important: look closely at the result.

Generative AI can produce something that looks convincing at first glance but falls apart when examined carefully.

Hands, fingers, faces, jewellery, lettering, reflections and complicated objects have historically been particularly troublesome for image-generation systems. Even as the technology improves, generated images can still contain mistakes or details that don’t make physical sense.

The problem isn’t always obvious.

A person might have a perfectly convincing face but an earring that disappears into their hair. A product might have a plausible shape but an impossible reflection. Text may look almost right while containing subtle errors.

Photographers are trained to look at images critically, so this is an area where that skill remains valuable.

Zoom in. Check the details. Don’t assume that a convincing overall image means every part of it is correct.

AI doesn’t replace photographic judgement

There is a temptation to look at increasingly capable AI tools and conclude that the photographer’s role is disappearing.

For many professional applications, the opposite is true.

Someone still needs to decide what the image should communicate, whether it is appropriate for the client, whether the lighting makes sense, whether the product is represented accurately and whether the finished image meets the required standard.

AI can produce thousands of possibilities very quickly.

That doesn’t mean thousands of good possibilities.

The ability to recognise a good image, construct an effective composition and understand light remains valuable whether the pixels came from a camera, Photoshop or a generative model.

Firefly and commercial photography

One reason Firefly is particularly relevant to working photographers is Adobe’s approach to the training data used for its own Firefly models.

Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on content it has permission or rights to use, including licensed content, Adobe Stock material and public-domain content. Adobe also says that customer content is not used to train its Firefly models.

Adobe describes outputs from its Firefly models as commercially safe, although photographers should still understand the terms applying to the particular feature or model they are using. Firefly also provides access to partner models, and those models can have different terms and considerations.

For commercial work, therefore, it is sensible to know which model you are using and what terms apply to the resulting content, rather than assuming that every generative AI tool has identical rules.

What about copyright?

This is an area where photographers need to be careful.

The fact that an AI system can generate an image does not automatically mean that the resulting image will have the same copyright protection as a photograph created by a human photographer.

Copyright law varies between countries and continues to develop alongside generative AI.

Adobe itself notes that whether a user has a copyright interest in Firefly output depends on the laws of the relevant jurisdiction.

For a commercial project, particularly one involving valuable intellectual property or an important client, it is worth understanding the position rather than relying on the assumption that an AI-generated image is legally identical to a photograph you have created yourself.

Content Credentials and transparency

Another development worth knowing about is Adobe’s use of Content Credentials.

Qualifying Firefly-generated content can have Content Credentials attached to it. These are tamper-evident metadata designed to provide information about how content was created or edited.

For photographers, this is potentially useful because AI-generated and AI-edited imagery is becoming increasingly difficult to identify simply by looking at the finished picture.

Being able to provide information about the origin and editing history of an image gives creators another way to be transparent about their workflow.

That may become increasingly important for commercial clients, publications, competitions and anyone concerned about the provenance of an image.

Where does this leave photography competitions?

This is perhaps the most complicated area for photographers.

There is a significant difference between using AI to remove a small distraction from a photograph and generating an entire image from a text prompt.

Whether either is acceptable depends entirely on the rules of the competition or organisation involved.

Some competitions allow certain forms of AI-assisted editing. Others place strict limits on generative AI or prohibit AI-generated images altogether.

Don’t assume that because an AI feature is built into Photoshop it is automatically acceptable under competition rules.

Always check the current rules before entering an image.

This is particularly important because competition definitions and policies are continuing to evolve as the technology changes.

Use AI as a tool, not a shortcut to judgement

The most useful way for photographers to think about Firefly is probably not as a replacement for the camera.

It is another tool.

A photographer might use it to explore an idea, extend a background, remove an unwanted object, create a concept for a client or produce supporting imagery for a marketing campaign.

The photographer still needs to make the creative decisions.

And just as importantly, they need to know when not to use it.

There are times when the authenticity of a real photograph matters. A wedding photograph, documentary image or photograph entered into a competition may have very different requirements from an advertising background or social-media graphic.

The technology will continue to improve. Firefly is already considerably more capable than the early versions that produced obviously strange hands, faces and objects.

But the basic lesson remains the same.

Use AI where it genuinely helps your photography and your business, but keep your critical eye firmly switched on.
