Fotospeed’s Photographer of the Year Announced
Neil Burnell has been announced as Fotospeed’s Photographer of the Year at The Photography Show 2019, for his shot of a Common Blue butterfly at a local nature reserve, winning over £2,000 worth of prizes.
Fotospeed has announced their Photographer of the Year at this year’s The Photography Show.
Neil Burnell has been chosen by the Fotospeed team as their Photographer of the Year. He submitted the winning image, of a roosting butterfly species, a Common Blue at his local nature reserve Berry Head, to Fotospeed’s weekly #fsprintmonday Twitter competition.
His photograph was chosen out of a gallery of previous #fsprintmonday winners, which were on display throughout The Photography Show. As the winner of the competition, Neil will be receiving:
- A Canon A2 printer (Pro-1000 or equivalent)
- Fotospeed inkjet paper worth £500
- A bespoke one-to-one day of tutoring with one of Fotospeed’s top photographers
When asked what it means to him to be Fotospeed’s Photographer of the Year, Neil said, “It’s a great feeling, to know you have been picked from the thousands of entries over the course of the year, it makes me very proud. It Is also really good timing for me, as I don’t currently print from home and it was something I was going to invest in this year”.
Neil from Devon had originally studied Art and Photography at College in the early nineties, before going into graphic design. Only recently has he discovered a passion for landscape and fine art photography and loves shooting different genres and subjects such as macro, landscapes, starscapes and seascapes.
After being inspired by several macro photographers over the last year, Neil was intrigued as to how they had managed to capture “astonishing butterfly shots”. He added, “The species captured in the photograph is a Common Blue at Berry Head. At the right time of year, there can be hundreds of butterflies to find, so it is just a case of finding one on a nice perch – the winning image was taken early in the morning while the butterflies were still sleeping”. To create the painterly look, Neil included some out of focus colourful flowers in the frame.
Neil entered #fsprintmonday to get more involved in the community of enthusiastic photographers on Twitter, and to additionally showcase his work. Sales and Marketing Director at Fotospeed, Toby Herlinger, said “This is what the #fsprintmonday competition is all about – we want to not only encourage people to share the photos that they are proud of within the community, but also to inspire enthusiasm for printing their images out”.
