Canon unveils EOS R8 Mark II with in-body image stabilisation
Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a new full-frame mirrorless camera that combines a compact design with a 24.2-megapixel sensor, high-speed shooting and, for the first time in the R8 series, in-body image stabilisation.
Designed for enthusiasts, travel photographers and creators looking for full-frame performance without the bulk of a professional camera, the EOS R8 Mark II features five-axis IBIS offering up to 7.5 stops of image stabilisation. Canon describes it as its lightest EOS camera with in-body image stabilisation.
At the heart of the camera is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with Canon’s DIGIC X processor. The camera can shoot at up to 40 frames per second using its electronic shutter, while a new pre-continuous shooting function can capture up to 20 frames before the shutter button is fully pressed – useful when trying to catch fleeting moments.
Autofocus is handled by Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, with subject recognition and tracking for people, animals and vehicles. A Register People Priority function can also be used to give selected people priority when shooting.
The camera’s new design draws inspiration from Canon’s heritage, while introducing a multi-controller and revised controls intended to provide a more familiar shooting experience. Despite its full-frame sensor and IBIS system, the body weighs approximately 546g with battery and card.
For video, the EOS R8 Mark II can record uncropped 4K at up to 60p, oversampled from 6K, while Full HD recording is available at up to 180fps for slow-motion footage. The camera also features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C connectivity and livestreaming capabilities.
Canon has also introduced an optional EG-E2 Extension Grip, designed to provide additional support and improved handling when using larger lenses, along with the Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2 flash.
Another new feature is Canon’s Dual Pixel 3D Converter, a free Windows application designed to create 3D images, models and video clips from compatible images captured using Canon’s Dual Pixel technology.
The Canon EOS R8 Mark II is expected to be available in late October 2026, with a US suggested retail price of $1,899 for the body only. In the UK, Canon has listed the camera at £1,729.99 body only, while the EOS R8 Mark II with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM lens is priced at £2,119.99.
The EOS R8 Mark II represents a substantial update to the original EOS R8, adding in-body stabilisation while retaining the compact full-frame format and high-speed shooting capabilities that make the R8 series attractive to photographers looking for a lightweight full-frame system.
