Kris Anderson is a commercial and fine art photographer, speaker, and photographic judge based in Brisbane, Australia.
Kris specialises in performing arts photography, including branding for performing arts companies, actor and performer headshots, dance photography, and live theatre production work. His deep connection to the performing arts comes from his own background as a live musician, performing both in bands and in theatre. Early in his photographic career, his theatre network provided a rich source of opportunities for experimentation, and after years as a generalist—shooting everything from weddings to product images—it was a natural progression for him to focus exclusively on the performing arts. Drawing on his performer’s insight, Kris understands the unique needs of his clients and delivers imagery that resonates.
In his personal illustrative work, Kris often explores themes surrounding modern life, mental health, and the influence of technology on people and relationships. Through carefully crafted composites, he tells stories that blend reality with the subtly surreal, addressing complex subjects with clarity, compassion, and creative vision.
Kris is also recognised for his boundary-pushing approach to portrait photography, particularly in long exposure abstract portraiture. In 2023, he achieved his Fellowship with the SWPP with a portfolio of abstract dancer portraits, and in 2024 he won a coveted Grand Award at the inaugural ICON International Photography Awards with an in-camera abstract portrait.
A highly experienced photographic judge, Kris trained extensively in the esteemed AIPP judge training programme and has served on panels for the AIPP (state and national), the NZIPP Iris Awards, SWPP in London, and WPPI in Las Vegas. He has also judged numerous online competitions including the Sony Alpha Awards, Rise International Photography Awards, and Asia Pacific Photography Awards, as well as donating his time to assess tertiary student projects and local camera club competitions. Since 2023, he has served as Director of Judging for the Australian Photographic Prize.
Kris holds a Fellowship with the SWPP and is a Master of Photography with the AIPP, NZIPP, Cosmos, and ICON. His accolades include being named the 2017 AIPP Australian Illustrative Professional Photographer of the Year, the 2019 AIPP Epson Queensland Professional Photographer of the Year, the 2025 SWPP Photojournalism Photographer of the Year, and the Overall Grand Champion at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Photography Awards. He is also a proud EIZO Ambassador.
