Now in its eighth year, This prestigious competition has grown into a renowned platform for showcasing the beauty and diversity of birdlife through the work of talented photographers from around the world. Since its inception, it has raised nearly £20,000 in support of vital conservation initiatives led by the RSPB.

With over 2,200 photographs submitted from around the globe, the The SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 competition has revealed a stunning celebration of avian beauty, from kingfishers and bald eagles to owls, flamingos, and countless species beyond. The diversity and quality of the entries have been truly breathtaking.

The winning entry by Gary Neville from Surrey, England.

Gary was at the 2026 Convention to pick up his award and Certificate.

Gary tells us about the image:

”The image was taken in Lake Kerkini in northern Greece. The lake, actually a man-made reservoir, is rich in wildlife and is especially renowned for its Dalmatian Pelicans, a favourite subject among photographers worldwide. I captured this image while leaning over the side of a boat, keeping my camera away from the surface of the water, whist watching the Dalmatian pelicans slowly get closer and closer to the boat in anticipation of a fish from the boatman – the fish are considered low quality and unsuitable for sale, and are instead thrown back to the local wildlife.”

With 759 phase-detection points and up to 94% frame coverage, the camera ensures precise subject tracking across nearly the entire image area, even in challenging low-light conditions down to EV -4.05.

High-resolution RAW processing is now supported through Imaging Edge Desktop application6 for unparalleled post-production flexibility.

Sony is pleased to announce the release of two new accessories within its Alpha™ camera range. Catering to the needs of professional photographers who frequently shoot in inclement weather or carry a super-telephoto Alpha lens over long distances, the new accessories provide comprehensive protection for Alpha camera gear.

To assist photographers dedicated to outdoor pursuits, a rain cover will be available from December that protects equipment from rain and snow, in addition a soft carrying case that balances protection and mobility for super-telephoto Alpha lenses will also be available from January. 

Rain Cover

The new rain cover is designed to withstand tough conditions and will protect your camera and lens even when shooting in rain or snow. It is made from breathable material (water vapour permeability of 20,000 g/m2/24h or higher1) preventing moisture build-up even during long periods of shooting.

The fastening strap makes the cover fast and easy to attach and remove, so you can quickly protect your equipment even in the event of sudden weather changes. When not in use, it can be folded away and stored conveniently in the attached pouch.

It includes a transparent window to ensure visibility of the viewfinder, monitor, and control panel on compatible Sony cameras during use, allowing shooting whilst protecting the equipment. 

The rain cover will be available in two sizes large (LCR-EL) and small (LCR-ES), so you can choose the best fit for the lens being used and can be purchased in both black and white. All variations will be available to purchase from December for £150 / €180.

Soft Carrying Case for Super-Telephoto Alpha Lenses

The new soft carrying case for Super-Telephoto Alpha Lenses has been carefully designed to ensure supreme protection of equipment from dust and scratches. It is designed with a conical shape, making it the perfect fit for storing and carrying compatible Sony lenses, a great addition to the range to support outdoor photography for sports events, bird and wildlife photography.

For easy transportation, it includes both shoulder straps and handles to allow for multiple carrying options, by hand, over the shoulder or crossbody.

The large opening zipper mechanism enables easy lens removal and the internal anti-drop strap secures the lens when the zipper is left open in case of accidental drops.

Sony is providing free software updates for the interchangeable-lens cameras Alpha 1 II and Alpha 9 III starting October 30, 2025. These updates support “Real-time Recognition AF+ (Plus)” with improved person recognition performance and recording of authenticity information for videos. Some features of this software update are planned for deployment to other models in the future.

Key updates for both the Alpha 1 II and Alpha 9 III models:

• Support for Real-time Recognition Auto Focus (AF+) with improved person recognition performance: Enhanced human pose estimation technology allows the camera to continuously track initially captured subjects with high accuracy, even in challenging sports scenes where athletes cross paths.
• Support for recording authenticity information in videos: Authenticity data, once available only for still images, can now be attached to video recordings as digital signatures, enhancing content verification. For details, please refer here.
• Enable preset focus function for zoom lenses without power zoom: The preset focus function can now be used with zoom lenses that do not have power zoom.

Additionally, the Alpha 9 III has received the following updates:

• The Addition of Auto to Recognition Target: When Auto is selected in the Recognition Target subject setting, the camera automatically selects and recognises a subject from among the recognition targets to which check marks were added on the [Auto Recog. Target] screen.
• Vertical orientation support for shooting information layout: The shooting information layout displayed on screen now supports both horizontal and vertical orientations.

On Saturday, 27th September 2025, photographers from across the region came together for a truly special event: Zoo Visions with Terry Donnelly. Hosted at the beautiful Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, this one-day experience gave attendees the chance to combine a love of wildlife with expert photographic tuition, hands-on learning, and the thrill of testing the latest Sony Alpha cameras.

A Day of Inspiration and Learning

The day was led by Sony Europe Imaging Ambassador Terry Donnelly, who shared his wealth of knowledge on wildlife photography. From techniques for capturing fast-moving animals to tips on composition and use of light, Terry guided photographers of all levels through practical sessions and informal mentoring.

Participants also had the unique opportunity to get hands-on with Sony Alpha cameras and lenses, testing out the kit in real-world conditions – and few settings could be more inspiring than the National Zoo of Wales.

Wildlife Encounters

One of the highlights of the day was, of course, the incredible wildlife. Attendees had the chance to photograph:

• Sumatran Tigers
• Snow Leopards
• Penguins
• Sea Lions
• And much more…

Every corner of the zoo offered new photographic opportunities, from the drama of the big cats to the playful charm of penguins diving into the water.

The Atmosphere

What stood out most wasn’t just the images created, but the atmosphere of the day. The group was buzzing with creativity, energy, and enthusiasm. Attendees were eager to share ideas, learn from each other, and, most importantly, enjoy the experience of photographing wildlife together.

Supporting Conservation

This event wasn’t just about photography – it was also about supporting the Welsh Mountain Zoo’s vital conservation work. By hosting Zoo Visions at the National Zoo of Wales, we were proud to highlight the importance of conservation and the role photography can play in telling those stories.
