Gary Neville from Surrey, England with this striking image of a Dalmatian pelican.

We are incredibly happy to announce the results of the SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 in aid of RSPB

Now in its eighth year, This prestigious competition has grown into a renowned platform for showcasing the beauty and diversity of birdlife through the work of talented photographers from around the world. Since its inception, it has raised nearly £20,000 in support of vital conservation initiatives led by the RSPB.

With over 2,200 photographs submitted from around the globe, the The SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year 2025 competition has revealed a stunning celebration of avian beauty, from kingfishers and bald eagles to owls, flamingos, and countless species beyond. The diversity and quality of the entries have been truly breathtaking.

The winning entry by Gary Neville from Surrey, England.

Gary was at the 2026 Convention to pick up his award and Certificate.

Gary tells us about the image:

”The image was taken in Lake Kerkini in northern Greece. The lake, actually a man-made reservoir, is rich in wildlife and is especially renowned for its Dalmatian Pelicans, a favourite subject among photographers worldwide. I captured this image while leaning over the side of a boat, keeping my camera away from the surface of the water, whist watching the Dalmatian pelicans slowly get closer and closer to the boat in anticipation of a fish from the boatman – the fish are considered low quality and unsuitable for sale, and are instead thrown back to the local wildlife.”

Equipment:
Sony A1
Tamron 70-180 f2.8 at around 95mm
1/400sec at F4, ISO 100

Nikon is delighted to reveal the highly anticipated shortlist for the 2025 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards. This year’s selection consists of 40 standalone images, 3 portfolio entries and 10 video entries – a captivating mix of inspiring and delightfully funny images, reminding us of the world’s most beguiling wildlife.

Among the colourful contenders for funniest wildlife image of 2025 is a dancing gorilla, a choir of lions and a quick-thinking frog on lookout duty! This year, there are also 10 amazing videos of wildlife’s most comical moments caught on camera, with highlights including a surfing heron and an orangutan getting up to mischief. The expert judges will be busy over the coming weeks deciding their favourite comedy critters.

The world’s most entertaining wildlife photography competition received a record number of entries this year. With nearly 10,000 submissions from 108 countries received, they all compete to win top prizes, including Nikon’s Z6III full-frame mirrorless camera, Z50II mirrorless camera and Nikon’s brand-new compact cinema camera, the ZR. The winner will also secure a once in a lifetime, one-week safari trip courtesy of Alex Walker’s Serian in the Masai Mara, as well as some of the best-selling photography rucksacks in the business from ThinkTANK.

Founded in 2015 by photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE and Tom Sullam, the awards combine exceptional wildlife photography with the power of humour to spotlight conservation. Every image is authentic, with no AI or digital manipulation allowed.

Comedy Wildlife is teaming up again with sustainable conservation organisation, the Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN), which over the past thirty years has invested £24 million in 220 conservation leaders in 80 countries. An inspiring effort which the awards are thrilled to champion.

Stefan Maier, Nikon Europe Senior General Manager Marketing says: “The Nikon Comedy Wildlife finalists are in, and we’re excited to share with you the brilliant images showcasing unique talent of photographers from every corner of the globe. These images combine wit and wonder to celebrate nature’s character, while emphasising the urgency of conservation. At Nikon, we’re proud to support a competition that sparks joy while reminding us why our wild world is worth protecting.”

Tom Sullam, Comedy Wildlife Competition Co-founder says: “We had an awesome year last year and are absolutely delighted to be able to partner with the Nikon team again for 2025. Their ongoing support has supercharged the competition, reaching more people in more countries than ever before, helping us raise awareness of animal and habitat conservation and crucially, highlight the fundamental importance of having wildlife on our planet and in our lives. These inspiring and funny photos and videos do just that. It’s a privilege to be part of this exciting journey, making us all laugh and we can’t wait to announce the winners in December.”

The Overall Winner, Category and Highly Commended Winners will be announced on Tuesday 9th December at a special awards evening in London. This will be followed by a one-week, free exhibition from 10th-16th December, where Nikon will showcase the 2025 Award Finalists at the Gallery@Oxo.

On Saturday, 27th September 2025, photographers from across the region came together for a truly special event: Zoo Visions with Terry Donnelly. Hosted at the beautiful Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, this one-day experience gave attendees the chance to combine a love of wildlife with expert photographic tuition, hands-on learning, and the thrill of testing the latest Sony Alpha cameras.

A Day of Inspiration and Learning

The day was led by Sony Europe Imaging Ambassador Terry Donnelly, who shared his wealth of knowledge on wildlife photography. From techniques for capturing fast-moving animals to tips on composition and use of light, Terry guided photographers of all levels through practical sessions and informal mentoring.

Participants also had the unique opportunity to get hands-on with Sony Alpha cameras and lenses, testing out the kit in real-world conditions – and few settings could be more inspiring than the National Zoo of Wales.

Wildlife Encounters

One of the highlights of the day was, of course, the incredible wildlife. Attendees had the chance to photograph:

Sumatran Tigers

Snow Leopards

Penguins

Sea Lions

And much more…

Every corner of the zoo offered new photographic opportunities, from the drama of the big cats to the playful charm of penguins diving into the water.

The Atmosphere

What stood out most wasn’t just the images created, but the atmosphere of the day. The group was buzzing with creativity, energy, and enthusiasm. Attendees were eager to share ideas, learn from each other, and, most importantly, enjoy the experience of photographing wildlife together.

Supporting Conservation

This event wasn’t just about photography – it was also about supporting the Welsh Mountain Zoo’s vital conservation work. By hosting Zoo Visions at the National Zoo of Wales, we were proud to highlight the importance of conservation and the role photography can play in telling those stories.

A Massive Thank You

Events like this don’t happen without teamwork. A huge thank you goes to:

Terry Donnelly for his inspiring tuition and guidance

Sony UK for providing the incredible Alpha cameras and lenses

Camera Centre UK for their support and expertise

And of course, the Welsh Mountain Zoo for welcoming us so warmly and providing such an inspiring backdrop

Looking Ahead

The Zoo Visions Experience Day was more than just a workshop – it was a celebration of photography, wildlife, and community. Judging by the smiles and the images produced, it’s safe to say everyone left with both new skills and unforgettable memories.

WildPhotos, the one-day nature photography symposium, created in partnership by Wildscreen and Wildlife Photographer of Year at the Natural History Museum, London, returns this October. The 2025 edition will take place at the British Library, London, UK, on Friday 17th October. The one-day event will feature a world-class line-up of 15 award-winning nature photographers, sharing the stories, craft and impact behind some of the most recent iconic wildlife photography.

Programme Highlights

The full line-up includes a compelling mix of 9 x 20 minute lightning talks, a panel discussion on the need for conservation photography and two headliners, featuring award-winning photographic talent spanning 9 countries.

Working from Home – Jennifer Hayes, Anthony Ochieng & Nayan Khanolkar
An exploration of what it means to photograph the wildlife in your own backyard, from the alleys of Mumbai, to ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and to the forests of Kenya – championing intimate and in-depth knowledge of place and species.

The Human Connection – Shin Arunrugstichai, Javier Aznar & Rena Effendi
A globe-spanning exploration of how our relationship with nature shapes the stories we tell—from the depths of the oceans to conflict zones and rural communities.

The full line-up follows the earlier announcement of this year’s headline speakers – David Doubilet and Karine Aigner, two of the most influential voices in visual storytelling:

David Doubilet, legendary photojournalist for National Geographic, known for his pioneering underwater photography that captures both the splendour and threats facing our oceans. With over 26,000 hours spent beneath the waves, Doubilet’s work has redefined how we see and understand life below the surface.

Karine Aigner, award-winning visual journalist whose powerful imagery explores the complex relationships between wildlife and human communities. Her storytelling centres empathy and connection, challenging audiences to see conservation through a more human lens. In 2022, Karine won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Grand Title, only the fifth women in over 40 years to receive the accolade.

Kathy Moran, current Jury Chair for Wildlife Photographer of the Year and formerly National Geographic Magazine’s Deputy Director of Photography, is executive producer of the event.

WildPhotos 2025 is kindly supported by Focused on Nature whose mission is to assist in the protection and conservation of threatened and endangered wildlife and wild places. Focused on Nature believes photography is integral to this mission.

Lucie Muir, CEO of Wildscreen, commented: “This year’s WildPhotos programme is a powerful reflection of our shared belief—alongside Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Focused on Nature—that storytelling can shift perspectives and spark change. From intimate portraits of backyard wildlife to bold investigations into human–nature relationships, the 2025 line-up offers an unmissable journey guided by those pushing the boundaries of conservation photography.

Hannah McCartney, Interim Head of Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the Natural History Museum, London, added: “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Wildscreen through what is set to be another fascinating day of insight into the world of nature photography. WildPhotos is a platform for photographers to connect, share and advocate for the natural world – and to push the boundaries of their craft.”

WildPhotos 2025 will take place a few days following the announcement of the 61st Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition winners on Tuesday 14 October at 11.30pm BST, and the opening of the flagship exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London on Friday 17 October.

The full programme is now available online, with tickets for both in-person and virtual attendance available at: https://wildscreen.org/wildphotos/

The first 50 limited-edition passes include a free ticket to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the Natural History Museum.
