British LED lighting manufacturer, Rotolight, has announced a firmware update available for all users of its award-winning AEOS 2 and NEO 3 RGBWW LED lights, offering a range of advancements to the popular lighting products.

This firmware upgrade adds a number of powerful enhancements to the functionality of the ground-breaking new lights whilst also implementing some popular user-requested features, as well as general performance improvements.

These updates continue to add to the extensive feature set that has seen the Rotolight AEOS 2 and NEO 3 scoop numerous awards since the product commenced shipping in February 22’ and demonstrates Rotolight’s commitment to delivering continual improvements and innovations to its loyal user base.

New Features

The latest firmware update includes selectable fan control modes, including Silent Fan Mode designed for video users, and is fully user-controllable.

A new ‘Lux mode’ setting offers the ultimate control for both video & photo users to extract maximum performance from the light, or to achieve a constant exposure across colour temperatures depending on user preference. Maximum Lux Mode will appeal to photographers, who want to utilise the maximum power of the lights at all times, whereas Constant Lux Mode is designed for videographers and cinematographers who may wish to maintain a constant exposure (lux) regardless of the colour temperature selected.

Rotolight NEO 3 and AEOS 2 feature an industry-first touchscreen interface that provides enhanced control and saves time on set. By popular demand, a new Touchscreen Lock Mode has been added to enable the lights to be placed in any location (i.e. a fireplace), whilst preventing accidental adjustment to chosen settings. To activate, simply press and hold both knobs at the same time to lock/unlock the screen.

This update features extensive enhancements of CineSFX® modes, including improved navigation of SFX controls making user customisation of SFX even more intuitive, as well as enhanced colour realism, and refinements to triggering of SFX via the wireless Elinchrom Skyport transmitter.

In an industry-first feature, the Rotolight NEO 3/ AEOS 2 now includes Dynamic Multi-Language Support which offers real-time adjustment throughout all menus and displays, in native Italian, French, German, Spanish and Dutch.

These new firmware additions have been developed alongside a suite of general performance improvements and minor bug fixes, including improved battery performance in maximum flash power, and improved third-party battery support in ‘max’ flash mode.

Rod Aaron Gammons, CEO, Rotolight, said: “The latest firmware updates for the Rotolight AEOS 2 and NEO 3 really demonstrate our commitment to deliver ongoing support for our users. The latest products in our range have already been incredibly well-received by creatives across the globe and we intend to continue to push forward with developments, reacting to requests from our customers while future-proofing their creative solutions.”

Firmware Roadmap

A major update (Firmware 2.0) is expected in late July providing support for Rotolight’s new native iOS & Android app which is in the final stages of beta testing and will launch simultaneously. The Rotolight app will provide wireless real-time control of brightness, colour temperature, HSI, gels, SFX, flash settings and more for the AEOS 2/NEO 3.

In a little over a decade, British LED lighting manufacturer, Rotolight, has emerged from a fledgling business and underdog in a mature sector to breaking boundaries with numerous industry firsts. Today, its market-leading innovations and 50+ patented technologies, designs and trademarks, forge the cornerstone of photographers, filmmakers and content creators across the globe, with over 140,000 units sold worldwide to date. Read on to learn more about how Rotolight grew from the founding family’s garden shed to an internationally recognised, award-winning LED lighting brand.

Prior to the birth of Rotolight in 2009, the family behind the brand, Rod Gammons Snr, Helen Gammons, and Rod Aaron Gammons, had already built a successful business in supplying tech into the film and broadcast market, whilst also supplying photographers and independent filmmakers with brands including Sony, Canon and Apple.

“We love being the disruptors. We’re all innovators, we’re all creatives, we all love the industry,” says Rod Gammons SNR, co-founder & head of product design. It was the launch of the Canon 5D Mark II in November 2008, that changed everything. It was a camera that transformed the imaging industry, democratising filmmaking and offering filmmakers an affordable, professional-grade camera system, that could shoot high definition video at an accessible price point for the very first time. The family recognised the shift in the market that this ground-breaking camera identified and hatched their plan to create a product that would offer the same advantages in the emerging LED lighting space. Rotolight was born.

“Rotolight started from really humble beginnings. Our first office was literally the garden shed at the back of my parent’s house. And I vividly remember, every single day at the end of a work day, my dad, my mum myself would be sat at the kitchen table, literally hand assembling these products and putting them together, and the FedEx truck would turn up at the house. And that was our business,” said Rod Aaron Gammons, CEO.

Many long hours were spent, developing a light that would deliver the efficiency of LED along with an excellent quality of colour. Rotolight’s first product was the RL48, a small and highly portable light that could mount over a shotgun mic or to a hot shoe. It was immediately recognised as a product that perfectly met the needs of the burgeoning DSLR filmmaking market, instantly propelling the Rotolight brand into the psyche of a new generation of creatives.

“It was crazy. People absolutely loved them because it was something that they could slip into their pocket and just pull out whenever they needed it,“ said Rod Gammons SNR.

Rotolight made a conscious decision to manufacture its products in the UK, sharing a production facility used by Red Bull Formula 1 and McLaren. As the epicentre of global innovation and engineering expertise, this helps to maintain the brand’s reputation of producing the highest quality lighting in the industry. Rotolight has persisted in investing heavily in research and development and has shown a consistent track record of bringing market first innovations, such as the very first suite of cinematic lighting effects, (CineSFX™), SmartSoft™ Electronic Diffusion, and being the first LEDs to offer ‘shoot what you see’ benefits of continuous lighting and High-Speed Sync flash all-in-one, allowing users to flash in any of 16.7M colours, 2500 digital gels or white light from 3-10,000 Kelvin.

“One of the great advantages we have at Rotolight is that we are a family business. We listen to our users. In fact, quite frankly, we think of them as part of our family. As a family business, we’re able to react extremely quickly to good things. We can change stuff and if we have an idea, we can run with it. It gives us incredible flexibility, which in some respects is why we perhaps do unexpected things; things that the larger companies take much longer to actually get on to. That’s why you’ve seen so many surprising new technologies coming out of Rotolight’s product line.” Said Rod Gammons SNR.

These technologies can be found across the multi-award-winning range of Rotolight products which have been used on major feature films, including Ghostbusters, Afterlife, The Colour Room and James Bond – Skyfall, as well as many TV shows, such as ITV’s Dancing on Ice, Amazon’s The Expanse, and Emmy-Award winning, Grey’s Anatomy. They’ve also been used by leading celebrity portrait photographers to capture iconic images of Grace Jones, Elton John, Jake Gyllenhall, Benedict Cumberbatch, Margot Robbie and Martin Scorcese. Rotolight’s products have since gone on to become the most highly awarded LED lights in history, with over 40 awards for innovation.

“Rotolight is a family business and that really means something. You know we’ve all got very different strengths, and yet we can all overlap a little bit too, which is why family businesses do so well. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved. We’ve worked so hard, and so have our staff. It’s been a really brilliant journey.” Said Helen Gammons, COO, Rotolight.

British LED lighting manufacturer, Rotolight has unveiled the world’s first electronic ‘SmartSoft™ Box’, for its award-winning AEOS 2 lights, along with a brand new native iOS & Android App.

Rotolight SmartSoft™ Box

Since being announced during Rotolight’s record-breaking Kickstarter campaign for the award-winning NEO 3 and AEOS 2, the Rotolight SmartSoft™ Box has proved to be one of the most highly anticipated products of the year. Now, the wait is finally over for the world’s first intelligent electronic softbox.

Delivering a genuine revolution in lighting control, the Rotolight SmartSoft™ Box has been developed to save photographers and filmmakers both time and money, allowing users to electronically adjust diffusion, focus and spread without the need for gels or additional modifiers. Like a LEE 216 on an adjustable dial, SmartSoft™ provides 1.5 stops of electronically variable diffusion thanks to Rotolight’s patented technology, providing the flexibility of a soft output and a harder light source all in one. SmartSoft™ was first debuted in Rotolight’s award-winning Titan Cinematic range, built natively into its Titan X2 and X1 fixtures, which have been used on countless feature films and TV shows by Netflix, Amazon Studios and SKY including BAFTA longlisted “The Colour Room” and “Greys Anatomy”. For the first time, this technology has now been adapted into a removable electronic softbox for its recently launched AEOS 2 fixtures, which weigh just 1.4kg (3lbs), making them the world’s thinnest, lightest 1×1 style lights in the market.

“The new SmartSoft™ Box has revolutionised how I can control light. It simply allows me to create pictures with just one modifier that have never been possible before. It’s a gamechanger in how I control light for both my commercial photography and has saved me so much time. The ease of use is phenomenal” Sam Nash, award-winning commercial & fashion photographer.

The SmartSoft™ box mounts in just seconds to the AEOS 2, and is adjustable via the intuitive touchscreen display or, via the Rotolight App

“Rotolight is delighted to announce the worlds first electronic SmartSoft™ box; a revolution in lighting control that saves time & money for photographers and filmmakers. Rotolight has proven that it is, yet again, at the cutting edge of patent-protected industry-first technologies in the lighting industry, providing our customers with unique state-of-the-art tools that enhance creative possibilities on set” Rod Aaron Gammons, CEO, Rotolight.

Rotolight Native iOS & Android App

With the all-new native Rotolight iOS and Android app, you’re always in control. It has never been simpler to switch between lighting modes, remotely adjust colour, power, SFX and much more. The new app allows the user to create custom groups and projects on up to 20 lights simultaneously; right from the palm of your hand.

Pricing and availability

Amateur Photographer magazine Editor, Nigel Atherton, introduced the accolade and the Rotolight NEO 3 and AEOS 2 by stating, “It’s funny, you wait years for a true innovation in LED lighting and then two arrive at the same time,” continuing, “LED lighting technology has advanced dramatically over the past 10 years, and UK-based Rotolight has been at the forefront of its development. Five years ago, the NEO 2 blazed a trail by combining variable colour temperature with both continuous light and flash. Now the NEO 3 goes several steps further, with increased brightness and full-colour output via its RGBWW LEDs. With its intuitive touchscreen control, the NEO 3 offers photographers a choice of modes. In CCT, you get variable colour temperature from 3000 to 10,000 K, while HSI gives a choice of 16.7 million colours covering pretty much the entire spectrum. In Gel mode, Rotolight has programmed in the spectral characteristics of 2,500 different filters. In any of these modes, the NEO 3 can be used either as a continuous light or flash. A variety of special effects is also available for video work. Powered by a Sony NP-F type battery, the NEO 3 measures 145mm in diameter and weighs 354g, which means it’s small enough to be used on a camera’s hot shoe. We’d recommend getting the Ultimate kit, which includes a diffusion dome that noticeably improves the quality of the light. Overall, it’s a great option for those who shoot both stills and moving images on the move.”

“We’re over the moon to pick up this prestigious award from such a highly respected publication. Amateur Photographer magazine is the only weekly photographic publication in the world and has a rich history in the sector. The annual Amateur Photographer awards are selected by their expert technical team and are some of the most sought-after in the industry. The recognition of Rotolight’s market-leading RGBWW LED lighting innovation is welcomed by the whole team and underlines the central goal of providing endless creative possibilities for our user community.” Rotolight CEO, Rod Aaron Gammons.

The Rotolight Neo 3 has been crowned as the leading On-Camera Flash by the respected UK publication, Photography News, in their 2021 awards program. The prestigious accolade represents an industry first as an RGBWW LED light collects the title, heading off a host of other notable manufacturers that were shortlisted in the category.

Will Cheung, Editor in Chief at Photography News said: “The Neo 3 is a significant step forward on Rotolight’s Neo 2, with more power in both continuous and flash modes. Plus, there are myriad colour options and greater capacity from rechargeable li-ion batteries. This new light arrives as the world’s brightest on-camera LED and is a very special bit of kit indeed. For the creative content creator who wants a portable light that suits video and stills, the Neo 3 must be considered. It has untold potential and with its clear layout, responsiveness and touch-screen LED control, it’s very user-friendly”

Other lights shortlisted in the category were the Profoto A10, the Pixapro GI01 Round Head TTL and the Hahnel Modus 360RT; all of which offer the form and function of more traditional strobe lights. The Rotolight NEO 3 picking up the win in the On-Camera Flash category this year represents a considerable achievement for an LED light. Notwithstanding the light’s groundbreaking continuous light capabilities, the pocket-sized powerhouse offers an array of bicolour LEDs with a selectable colour temperature range of 3000K to 10,000K. This, along with 16.7 million colours in HSI mode and 2500 filters, are all available in continuous or flash mode with flash sync up to 1/8000sec possible.

“We’re incredibly excited to receive this prestigious award from the team at Photography News; made even more special by the fact that it adds another first to the list of industry firsts for the NEO 3,” said Rotolight CEO, Rod Aaron Gammons. Continuing: “The Neo 3 combines the ‘shoot what you see’ benefits of continuous light, with a world-first High-Speed Sync RGBWW flash, providing photographers and filmmakers with unlimited creative possibilities. We cannot wait to see what people create with the new light as it reaches its first users after last year’s successful Kickstarter campaign.”

Achieve Beautiful Soft Light with the New NEO 3 Diffuser Dome

Launching in March, Rotolight has also revealed a brand new diffuser dome, which has been designed exclusively for the NEO 3. Use in flash or continuous mode to alleviate harsh shadows. It is a quick and portable tool to instantly soften your light

Rotolight Native APP

Rotolight is also launching an exciting native iOS and Android app that will connect with both the NEO 3 and AEOS 2. Users can easily switch between lighting modes to adjust colour, power and flash settings whilst being able to create custom groups and projects on up to 20 lights simultaneously with AEOS 2 and NEO 3 acting as a bridge to control the larger Rotolight Titans.
