Food photography is more than just capturing a meal; it’s about transforming ingredients and dishes into visual delights that tantalize the taste buds before the first bite. From vibrant salads to decadent desserts, food photography aims to showcase the artistry and craftsmanship behind each culinary creation. Lighting plays a crucial role, accentuating textures, colors, and contours to make every dish look irresistible. Composition is key, as photographers carefully arrange elements to create a harmonious balance and draw the viewer’s eye to the focal point. Props and backgrounds are meticulously chosen to complement the food and tell a story, whether it’s a cozy homemade meal or an elegant dining experience. Ultimately, food photography celebrates the beauty of gastronomy, inviting viewers to savor the flavors with their eyes before indulging in the feast.

Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year, globally recognised for telling the world’s most important food stories, is open for entries for 2023.

The competition, now in its 12th year, has received almost 100,000 entries from nearly 100 countries. ‘Never has the issue of food been so important, so central to our understanding of what it means to be alive,’ says Caroline Kenyon, Director/Founder of the Awards. ‘Governments across the world grapple with the cost-of-living crisis, food banks struggle to keep pace with demand, battleships are on standby to escort grain from the port of Odessa. Meanwhile, in the everyday, we continue to grow produce, to gather in, to cook, to eat, to celebrate.’

With over 25 categories, the Awards recognise the great diversity of ways in which food touches our lives. ‘What is really wonderful is the ever-increasing breadth of imagery, from still life to landscape, interior to portraiture, the macro to the immense, intimate street photography to epic drone images, the scope becomes greater year by year,’ says David Loftus, Chair of Judges. ‘Judging is always a humbling and enlightening experience and I so look forward to the coming year.’

‘Putting on the Ritz’ by John Carey.

In an exciting addition for 2023, there is a new category, Pink Lady® Moments of Joy, for images showing the joy experienced through food; whether it be in the growing, preparing and cooking, or the serving and eating of food. The winner of the Pink Lady® Moments of Joy category will win £1,500 GBP.

This year’s global judging panel, chaired by legendary food photographer, David Loftus, includes: Ella Ravilious, Curator, Victoria and Albert Museum, Nik Sharma, Cookbook author, Photographer, Columnist, Claire Rees, Photography Director, Bafta, Phillip Prodger, Executive Director, Curatorial Exhibitions, LA and former Head of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery, London and Rein Skullerud, Head of Photo Unit, World Food Programme.

The media coverage of the Awards continues to grow across the world. To date, last year’s photographs have been covered by media in over 50 countries: from the BBC, The Times, Forbes, National Geographic and MSN, to Corriere della Sera, CNN, China Daily, Tatler and El Mundo. In addition, winning photographers have been interviewed on the world’s largest radio station, BBC World Service, and one of America’s biggest news TV programmes, CBS Saturday Morning.

‘I do not usually enter competitions but entered Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year because the imagery is so stellar and the contest focuses specifically on food and wine,’ says Suzanne Becker Bronk, a 2022 Finalist. ‘Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year has elevated the art of food and wine photography with their well run and beautifully curated competition. I am inspired by many of their winners and have discovered excellent food and wine photographers from all over the world.’

‘The Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year competition is by far the pinnacle of the food photography year; it absolutely sets the standard of what is the best and innovative work in food photography around the world,’ says Robin Goodlad, a 2021 Finalist. ‘It is a really important way for me to push myself to see if I can create the best images possible. After all the ways it has benefitted me as a photographer, I can’t imagine not entering! If you have an interest in food photography, then being part of the competition is an absolute must.’
