It is a big day for Nik Collection. Today’s release of the world’s favorite set of photo-editing plugins for Photoshop and Lightroom Classic marks the culmination of a six-year project to entirely rebuild the software inherited from Google in 2017.

Available now, version 6.3 is faster and more reliable than ever before, and features comprehensive updates to Nik Sharpener and Nik HDR Efex.

Paris (France): DxO Labs, creator of pioneering photo-editing software for over 20 years, is proud to present its first fully authored release of Nik Collection, bringing greater stability, speed, and a refined editing experience. Version 6.3 also features significant updates to two of the suite’s eight premium plugins.

Nik Collection completely redesigned by DxO Labs

In May 2017 Google announced it would no longer be supporting or developing the collection of plugins that were acquired from Nik Software in 2012. Justifiably, the world of photography was troubled; photographers expressed their dismay and more than 15,000 people from around the globe signed a petition calling on Google to keep Nik Collection alive.

Happily, in October 2017, Google decided to entrust Nik Collection to one of the most innovative software companies in consumer imaging: DxO Labs. Consequently, DxO was faced with a major challenge: making sense of millions of lines of code without any clear documentation. Nonetheless, having made a commitment to the photographic community to ensure the future of Nik Collection, the hard work began!

Six years later, the release of Nik Collection 6.3 marks the end of that journey. The huge task of reauthoring is complete, with every line of code rewritten for the latest technology. The suite is now fully compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Apple Silicon, it works harmoniously within Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic and Affinity Photo, it is faster and more reliable than ever before.

CEO of DxO Labs, Jérôme Ménière, looks forward to where Nik Collection will go next. “We are hugely proud of this achievement. With this work complete, we can now focus solely on adding exciting new features and technology. Our talented engineers are committed to making Nik Collection the indispensable creative companion to every passionate photographer’s workflow.”

New for 6.3: Improved Sharpener and HDR Efex

The new editions of Nik Sharpener and Nik HDR Efex include a host of updates making them more powerful and easier to use. Both feature a new interface with a clearer, cleaner look that matches the other Nik Collection plugins. Also, you can now choose where sliders for local adjustments appear on-screen: controls can be either kept in a sidebar to tidy the image area, or overlaid in traditional style.

And as with Nik Collection 6.3’s other plugins, the U Point™ technology now features:

NEW Control Lines add flexibility when making broad adjustments, letting you harness the power of Control Points when sharpening across linear gradients

NEW Control Point diffusion lets you regulate the strength and style of sharpening adjustments more easily

NEW Control Points and Control Lines can now be inverted, giving you huge flexibility when sharpening specific areas of an image

NEW Color Selectivity sliders allow Control Point and Control Line editing to be tied to specific colors and tones in an image

NEW Renamable Local Adjustments let you stay on top of complex edits, and local adjustments can now be saved as Presets, giving you quick access to frequently used sharpening recipes.

Nik Collection 6.3 makes editing easy

Thanks to all of its new and improved features, Nik Collection 6.3 is easier to use than ever before. It plugs straight into Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom Classic, DxO PhotoLab, and Affinity Photo, providing unprecedented creative control without affecting your preferred workflow.

Several new workflow features make editing even easier:

NEW Turn your edits into a Smart Object at any stage from within the plugin, giving you fully non-destructive editing in Photoshop

NEW Call on any of your last 15 Nik Collection edits and apply them with a single click

NEW Presets can now be searched for by name, so you can instantly find your favorite edits

NEW HiDPI & Multiscreen support lets you work with all screen configurations

NEW Affinity Photo is now automatically detected as part of installation.

All about Nik Collection 6.3

Nik Collection 6.3 includes eight powerful plugins that can also function as standalone applications. They cover everything you need as a photographer to improve your images, both creatively and technically.

Nik Collection 6.3: Price and availability

Nik Collection 6.3 is available now as a free upgrade for existing Nik Collection 6 users.

New customers can download Windows and macOS versions exclusively from the DxO website (https://shop.dxo.com/en) at the prices listed below, while a 30-day free trial is also available.

DxO’s Optics Modules offer unparalleled corrections, including unique lens softness improvements and distortion corrections that maximize field of view. DxO’s software now corrects more than 80,000 lens and camera combinations.

Paris (France): DxO, the company that has pioneered calibration-based optical corrections for 20 years, today announces its latest batch of Optics Modules. The release of 1,693 DxO Optics Modules includes support for the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, the Fujifilm X-T5, the Sony A7R V, five lenses from Sigma, and more.

For quality-conscious photographers, DxO Optics Modules are a wealth of individually tailored, laboratory-grade corrections, which present the most accurate and powerful route to improving image quality on the market. Superior to other optical correction software, DxO’s adjustments vastly improve results, whether they are applied to entry-level lenses or professional-grade glass.

Essentially, the performance of any lens can be boosted by processing RAW files with DxO software: PhotoLab, PureRAW, FilmPack, and ViewPoint.

A unique approach to defeating lens softness

All correction software offers digital sharpening to combat lens softness, but DxO’s approach is unique and superior, taking into account the varying levels of sharpness across a lens’s entire field of view. Rather than applying general sharpening across the entire image (as with lesser software), DxO Optics Modules target sharpening as required, such as when a lens gets progressively softer towards its edges.

As seen with the Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN, the boost in image quality by DxO Optics Modules makes it perform better in terms of sharpness and distortion (while also eliminating vignetting and aberrations). As illustrated below, nowhere is this clearer than in combating lens softness.

The uncorrected lens displays a significant difference in sharpness between the center of the frame and the corners.

Typically, photo editing software uses a generic profile to make a global correction across the entire image based on the sharpening required at the center.

Edge of frame sharpening from Adobe Lightroom® (left) and DxO Optics Modules (right). Unlike Adobe Lightroom, DxO Optics Modules are able to progressively increase corrections away from the frame’s center, allowing for a sharper overall image.

Sophisticated distortion corrections deliver greater image area

DxO’s Optics Modules frequently deliver a greater image area thanks to more refined assessments when correcting distortions. When needed, DxO Optics Modules give photographers the option to gain extra image area when compared with the crop applied as the result of Lightroom’s corrections.

Intelligent control of chromatic aberration

In addition, DxO’s Optics Modules remove chromatic aberrations — both longitudinal, and lateral. Chromatic aberrations vary depending on the focal length and distance, and DxO’s algorithms take these into account in order to perform more accurate corrections. Colored outlines are removed without degrading the image’s color or detail.

Vignetting accurately removed

Finally, vignetting is resolved, correcting the darker edges of the frame that can occur in certain lenses and at specific focal lengths.

The most exacting science, the highest quality

Each DxO Optics Module is created using individual camera and lens combinations. This means that any minor differences in the performance of a sensor can be measured across all the examples of it in a manufacturer’s lens mount range.

For instance, with the new Optics Modules for the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS S, measurements were not made using just a single full-frame Alpha camera, but with almost every Sony camera on the market.

Latest DxO Optics Modules

The latest DxO Optics Modules update — available now — includes the following cameras and lenses, each optimized for specific camera and lens combinations:

Canon EOS R6 Mark II

Fujifilm X-T5

OM System OM-5

DxO introduces 1,701 new Optics Modules and continues to offer superior lens corrections not seen elsewhere – including greater field of view and improved lens sharpness

At 16mm, the original, uncorrected RAW image displays strong vignetting and barrel distortion.

In addition, DxO’s advanced RAW photo-editing software PhotoLab 6.1 introduces a boost to color control, improvements to the user interface, and updates to its digital asset management system.

Paris (France): DxO, the company that invented calibration-based optical corrections 20 years ago, today announces the immediate availability of 1,701 new DxO Optics Modules, consisting of three new cameras and 18 optics, including the highly anticipated Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. The total number of DxO Optics Modules now exceeds 78,000 camera and lens combinations.

As always, each DxO Optics Module is individually crafted in the company’s purpose-built laboratories, delivering laboratory-grade correction of all optical faults: distortion, lens softness, vignetting, and chromatic aberration. It ensures that photographers get superior image quality from their equipment compared to using other editing software.

The conversion made by Adobe Lightroom® crops the frame by 10%.

In the case of less expensive gear, such as the new Canon RF 15-30mm lens, DxO Optics Modules’ spectacular boost in image quality often makes them perform like pro-level equipment in terms of sharpness, distortion, vignetting, and aberrations – as illustrated below:

Not just sharper, but an improved field of view

Let’s take the example of the new Canon RF 15-30mm lens at 16mm: generic RAW conversion software will typically crop 10% or more of the image. For photographers who want to avoid losing precious detail from the edge of the frame, DxO’s superior corrections maximize the lens’s field of view – while also delivering superior corrections to sharpness and distortion.

With DxO Optics Modules, photographers can enjoy all the data captured by the sensor. Essentially, it gives them what they paid for – a lens that is truly wide-angle, not cropped.

The version produced by DxO PhotoLab 6 perfectly fixes all the optical defects and in addition, doesn’t crop the image so content at the edges of the frame is retained — the blue box represents the crop done by Adobe Lightroom.

Improved lens sharpness as standard

Another unique benefit of working with DxO Optics Modules is the fully automatic correction of lack of lens sharpness uniformity across the entire image.

DxO uses an exclusive lens sharpness calibration that delivers tailor-made adjustments and corrections across each lens’s field of view. Unlike competitors, sharpening is applied at different levels, specific to a lens’s idiosyncrasies. For instance, sharpening might increase towards the edge of the frame to balance any radial softness. This achieves superior results when compared to applying general sharpening across the entire image — an approach taken in lesser software.

Latest DxO Optics Modules
The latest DxO Optics Modules update — available now — includes the following cameras:
● Fujifilm X-H2
● Nikon D100
● Sony FX30

There’s also support for a range of new lenses – each optimized for specific camera and lens combinations. The list includes:
● Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
● Fujifilm GF 20-35mmF4 R WR
● Fujifilm XF 18-120mm F4 LM PZ WR
● Fujifilm XF 30mm F2.8 R LM WR
● HD Pentax- DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED PLM AW
● M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400 F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO with TC x1.4 Zuiko
● M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400 F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO with TC x2.0 Zuiko
● Panasonic Lumix S 18mm F1.8
● Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD
● Tamron 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD
● Tamron 70-300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD
● Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 Di III VC VXD
● Zeiss Milvus 15mm F2.8 ZE
● Zeiss Milvus 15mm F2.8 ZF.2
● Zeiss Milvus 18mm F2.8 ZE
● Zeiss Milvus 18mm F2.8 ZF.2
● Zeiss Milvus 135mm F2 ZE
● Zeiss Milvus 135mm F2 ZF.2

Announcing DxO PhotoLab 6.1

In addition, DxO announces an update to DxO PhotoLab 6, the advanced, end-to-end RAW photo editor released in October, and renowned for its noise reduction and image enhancement technology. Version 6.1 introduces updates to smooth workflow, improve existing tools, and enhance the power of its robust digital asset management system.

Building on its vast new working color space, DxO Wide Gamut, DxO adds a slider to the soft proofing palette and export window that protects saturated colors.

The powerful PhotoLibrary sees further improvements. The color tags introduced in version 6 are made more accessible as they can now be applied when browsing and culling images in full-screen mode, and changes have been made to keywords. Users can search for images within an entire keywords hierarchy (as opposed to just children), and it’s now possible to apply an entire keyword hierarchy or selected keywords to an image. When filtering, the menu of options has been updated to give a more logical order and new icons have been introduced.

In addition, Windows users have extra options for projects and creating project groups, the Preferences panel now has a new Metadata tab, and macOS users can now add keyword hierarchy to the DC subject.

Version 6.1 brings some updates to the interface, improving usability, too. DxO PhotoLab 6’s powerful new ReTouch tool has been enhanced: the visibility of the outline of shapes has been improved and shapes are no longer lost when activating and deactivating the “Show mask” option. Users with DxO ViewPoint 4 installed will also notice that the cropped area is visible when using the innovative ReShape tool, allowing for more precise warping adjustments.

Similarly, Windows users will find that the cropped area of an image is visible when using the Repair tool and when making changes through Local Adjustments, giving greater flexibility while editing.

Price and availability

DxO PhotoLab 6.1 (Windows and macOS) is now available for download on the DxO website (https://shop.dxo.com/) at the following prices:

● DxO PhotoLab 6.1 ESSENTIAL Edition £129
● DxO PhotoLab 6.1 ELITE Edition £199

A free, 30-day trial is available. Owners of DxO PhotoLab 6 can update for free from within the software. Also, throughout December, DxO has a special holiday gift: photographers save 30% when they buy two or more DxO software titles.

Alan Jones’s street image entitled ‘Church Goers’ has been awarded 1st place in this year’s Street Photography Competition.

For this competition we saw 100s of images from around the globe featuring everything from workers, musicians, holidaymakers to people going about their day to day business.

Well done all a fantastic selection of images entered.

Alan has won 12 months Professional membership with The Societies of Photographers & DxO PureRAW 2 Software valued at £115.

He goes on and tells us ”The image was taken at a church door in Barcelona. It was entirely candid. I saw the possibilities of a shot very quickly and was keen to get a symmetrical composition. Fortunately no other passers-by got in the way. The crossed legs of the two individuals was a bonus. The colour version is good but I thought B+W suited better.”

”It was taken on a Canon 5D with EF24-105 L lens at 200 ISO f8 at 1/15th.”

Colin Jones The Societies Director says, “The Street Photography Competition was very popular this year with entries coming in from all around the world. Alan’s image suited the theme of the competition, splendidly capturing a moment in time.”

DxO Labs, the company behind RAW photo workflow software DxO PhotoLab, just returned from Photopia Hamburg where it collected the TIPA award for Best Imaging Software for its flagship RAW photo editing software, DxO PhotoLab – the third consecutive year that it has won, and seventh in total.

The Technical Image and Press Association (TIPA) praised DxO PhotoLab 5 for having “more nuanced controls, nimbler image management, and greater speed in handling large-file image processing tasks.” It also noted the exceptional quality delivered by PhotoLab’s DeepPRIME engine in denoising and demosaicing files, technology that gives photographers stunning improvements when working with high ISO images.

TIPA has been presenting the world’s most coveted photo and imaging awards since 1991, bringing together respected imaging experts and journalists from around the globe. The Awards’ 40 categories include gear and services, featuring cameras, lenses, lighting accessories – and of course image editing software – which is vital for enthusiasts and professionals in getting the best from their photos.

Collecting the award in Hamburg, Nicolas Beaumont, DxO Products Evangelist, explained the company’s delight: “To be awarded for the third consecutive year – and for the seventh time in total – is a real honor. We now look forward to seeing the response to the latest version of our flagship software, DxO PhotoLab 6, which was launched earlier this month.”
